"Nippon" historically refers to goods exported from Japan to Europe and the United States between 1891 and 1921. This term originates from the McKinley Tariff Act passed by the United States Congress in October 1891, which mandated that all foreign goods be clearly labeled in English to indicate their country of origin. "Nippon" is how the Japanese refer to their country, hence its appearance on exports during this period. However, in 1921, the United States government mandated that the term "Nippon" be replaced with "Japan" on all imports, recognizing that "Nippon" had no direct English translation. This legislative change required that all goods imported from Japan thereafter be marked with the English name “Japan."
